The question of the number of subjects to write in a university’s, a polytechnic’s, or a college’s Post Utme Exam is something of concern for all prospective candidates seeking admissions. Especially for those who are aware that their proposed universities, polytechnics, or colleges of education will use post-JAMB tests to screen them for admissions.
Of course, a few universities still adopt exams. This set of institutions will ask their applicants to prepare for computer-based tests (mostly).
As a result, aspirants who want to know the number of subjects to expect for the post-UTME, the possible subject combination, what to read for the post-UTME, the true nature of the questions i.e. theory or objectives, and other related questions, will find this post helpful.
This post will share a general view of what to expect in UTME and possible three, four, or five exam subjects. It will also, give a few references of universities and other institutions using the post-UTME approach, to date, and what they’re likely to test you on.
General Subjects to Expect in Post UTME
How many subjects are in the post-UTME questions? Most institutions set questions on 4 to 5 subjects for their aspirants. Questions are mainly for:
- Four Subjects Written in UTME: Here, the concerned universities such as the University of Lagos, University of Benin, Ahmadu Bello University, Obafemi Awolowo University, and Federal Polytechnic Ede to mention a few, will set questions strictly for applicants based on the subject combination in his or her UTME. For instance, an Art student who wrote English, Literature in English, CRS, and Government in JAMB UTME will equally be tested on the four subjects. A science counterpart will also be tested on similar subjects such as English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics.
- Five Subjects including General Paper: Here, the concerned institutions will set questions for applicants on all their subject combinations in UTME as well as for General Papers. The general papers will, of course, contain questions in such areas as politics, government, history, biology, science, social studies, geography, and current affairs to mention a few. Institutions well known for this include the Nigerian Police Academy (POLAC), Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), etc
- Three Subjects including General Papers: Here, candidates are generally tested in English and Mathematics. The third paper will be questions from General Papers. The University of Ilorin is one of the universities found of adopting this method.
How Difficult are Post UTME Questions?
As an aspirant, you may want to know what it takes to pass post-UTME. You want to know the true nature of the questions to expect in the exams. Will the questions be more difficult than what you had in UTME? Are they as tough as UTME subjects? Is there any difference?
Anyway, before you overread, experiences had shown that questions in post-UTMEs are of the same nature as those written in UTMEs. Candidates can prepare for their post-UTME with the same past questions packs used for the JAMB UTME preparation. You can as well get dedicated post-UTME packs from the same institutions.
In summary, don’t expect a significant difference (if any) in the types of questions.
Nature of the Post UTME Questions
You may want to know if the post-UTME questions are set in objectives (i.e. multiple-choice – with A, B, C, and D options) or theory. Post-UTME questions are generally objective assessments.
You’re to use (in most cases) a computer. Just as in UTME, you’re given a specific duration to complete multiple-choice questions (picking answers from A, B, C, or D) rather than theory where you’re to write answers down.
Of course, most schools may not test you with more than 25 questions per subject and they may test you with 50 questions altogether. If tested with 25 questions by subject, expect 100 questions altogether. If 50 questions, expect a mixture of all the subject combinations.
How to Prepare for CBT Post UTME Exams
As earlier detailed, there seems to be nothing different between your UTME and the Post UTME. Hence, nothing is different about how to do it. However, using past question packs of the proposed institution may set your mind free from any doubt that you may be missing out on something.
